Double Hung vs Single Hung Windows: What’s Best for Your Home?

If you’re currently shopping new windows, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the terms single hung and double hung. Though those might seem similar, they operate very differently — and deciding to go with one over the other can make a big difference in comfort, maintenance, and long-term satisfaction.

We here at Bella Vista Windows and Doors work with homeowners all across Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, and The Woodlands to select the right windows that will fit with their homes and everyday life. If you’re not sure which type of window works best for you, here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Single Hung Window?

Single Hung Window
The top sash of a single hung window is fixed in place. This is beneficial when applied to oriel style windows (the bottom sash is smaller than the top).

A single hung window consists of 2 sections (sashes), where the bottom sash is operable, while the top remains stationary. This is one of the oldest types of windows – and it is still popular today because it is uncomplicated and less expensive.

Why You Want Single Hung Windows as a Homeowner:

  • Less Expensive than double hung
  • Less moving parts, so fewer points of entry for air infiltration, making it a bit more energy efficient
  • Is fine in rooms with easy exterior access (e.g., first floor)
  • A more suitable choice for homes in Houston and surrounding areas—especially when dealing with tall windows featuring an oriel-style bottom sash (smaller than the top), which is a very common configuration in this region
  • You can have operable shapes like round top windows with a single hung.  Something not possible with a double hung unless a half round picture window is mulled to the top

Single hung windows can be manufactured in a variety of shapes, unlike double hung which may require special shapes to be independent of the operable window.

What Is a Double Hung Window?

Double hung window: Again, two sashes that open. You can open the one at the bottom, or at the top, or both. The majority of double hung windows also tilt inward, allowing for easier cleaning from the inside of your home.

Why Double Hung Windows Are Popular:

  • You won’t need a ladder to wash the window from the outside because both sashes tilt in
  • Opens for a better air flow (top and bottom open)
  • Safer for homes with children — open the top sash for ventilation without concern about accidents
  • Excellent for bathrooms and bedrooms in which airborne humidity and limited ventilation are primary issues
